I have been on a maternity break for the past two months and I CANNOT stop obsessing over how difficult it has been to switch off, professionally. The endless exposure to gadgets and the convenience of working from our phones has made it extremely difficult to truly take any time off. This is even more difficult when you are an entrepreneur, working on your own 👀

I was expected to turn off the outside professional world and suddenly hibernate into an inside domestic world. Does anybody realise how unbearably torturous it is today to ask a working woman’s overstimulated brain to SUDDENLY transition into slow living??

As I zoomed into the inner world, I noticed the sheer abundance of feminine energies around me, from nurses and midwives to the elderly women of the family to loving friends and relatives reaching out from faraway places. In this ecosystem, I realised how even the seemingly domestic women possess MOST of the qualities of top-notch business leaders…Time management, attention to detail, strict adherence to systems, multi-tasking, planning & foresight, focus on priorities, working under pressure and meeting deadlines, loyalty, awesome PR skills, enviable interpersonal skills: Responsibility, sensitivity, and brilliant communication skills! What a power-packed skill set that is!

But what are we bad at? And how can the workplace support us??

🔹 We are bad at believing in ourselves- we need the support of positive communities, more meaningful socialising and better clinical mental health support at work.

🔹 We are bad at saying NO- we need professional mindset trainings on identifying, creating and maintaining boundaries.

🔹 We are bad at digesting judgement, surviving mean behaviours and combating impatience – we need workspaces to be a little gentle and patient. Show us lesser judgement, some faith and we will show you what Profit really looks like!

🔹 We are bad at being ok with leaving our families uncared for – we need flexibility in working hours and empathetic sick leaves when we need to take care of our families. Better childcare facilities, breastfeeding and pumping rooms are non-negotiables for organisations keen on employing more women!

Women are no longer a minority in the workspace; we are brilliant, feisty, and capable colleagues.

Then why are our systems still not adapted to the changing times??? Why should issues about equal pay, workspace convenience, and demanding systemic support from communities and companies even exist??

It is unfortunate that what should have become common knowledge by now is still a distant dream for most modern organisations. Organisations that aspire to stay relevant in future will need a SOLID female task force. Therefore, before preaching us to TAKE IT EASY, try to MAKE IT EASY!

What MAKES IT EASY for you at your workplace? What points did I miss? Let me know in the comments!
